EASY Coconut Yogurt Recipe
I love coconut yogurt, so when I was told back in July 2012 that coconut yogurt would be better for my bones I started to make it and now eat it every day.
The video shows you step by step how to make the coconut yoghurt. It is simple and easy. Lets have some fun. Video is 5 mins and there is a transcript below.
1 sachet of Kefir starter.( or a spoonful of start from a friend who already makes the coconut yogurt.
2 cans Of Organic Coconut Cream
1 glass Jar ( Litre/ 2 pints)
Stirring spoon- wooden or plastic preferably
Piece of mesh or gauze cut to the size that will comfortably cover the mouth of the jar and 1 elastic band or stretch mesh bag. Open the sachet and pour into the jar, then pour in the coconut cream from the 2 cans and mix well. Now take the mesh and cover the mouth of the jar and leave on you kitchen bench for 24 hours. Then remove the mesh and screw the lid on. Now put it in your refrigerator for 12 hours before you use it.
Ways you can use coconut yogurt.
- Yummy by the spoonful as a snack
- Topping for fruit- use instead of cream, icecream and any other topping you might use.
- Add to smoothies, curries, soups, baking recipes………

Today I am going to show you how to make yummy organic coconut yoghurt with a simple quick recipe.
Why coconut yoghurt? firstly it tastes delicious, it is 100% natural … 100% dairy free … 100% gluten free and full of lots of goodies for your body too- probiotics
This is a jar I made. I have been making my yoghurt with the same culture I was given back in July 2012, by my friend Tahlia. At that time i was still eating yummy greek yoghurt. I was told that even this yoghurt was not good for my bones.
So I took home my small jar of coconut yoghurt and went to supermarket and bought 2 x 400 ml cans (14 ounces) of organic coconut cream- you can get low fat too. I have tried both and the low fat makes a thinner yoghurt
Last week I shared my alkaline breakfast on facebook and several friends asked how i made it so here is what you need to get started:
A one litre glass jar ( 32 oz ) or you could use 2 500ml/ 16 oz jars which is what I have been doing.
If you don’t have a friend who makes organic coconut yoghurt you will need to purchase a probiotic starter called Kefir. I bought this in my health food shop cost was $9 aud and there are 5 sachets in a pack.
If you follow the instructions on the pack it says you can use this first batch up to 5 times making 5 liters of yoghurt. This is the first time I have bought Kefir- I have been remaking my organic coconut yoghurt from the original starter each week.The instructions say 5 sachets make 25L.
So what do you do
Stir contents of 1x Kefir sachet into 2 cans of coconut cream. Leave for 24h at 20C on the kitchen bench and I cover it with mesh. I then place in fridge for 12h.
Voila, you have yummy coconut yoghurt that you can use on your quinoa porridge, as a substitute for any dairy topping and your inner health will love you too. Wow I was going to be googling how to make coconut yogurt. I have allergies to dairy and tried coconut the other day. This picky eater likes it. 🙂

I got the stuff to make this last night. Now my next question is after the first time how do you make yogurt from the yogurt start for next time? I know I could google but I choose to focus my time on other areas. I also like the contact of talking to such a great lady as yourself. 🙂

What I did when I first started I took a couple of spoonfuls and put them into another jar and added one can of organic coconut cream to the yoghurt and again left for 24hours (at room temp 20C or 68 F) then in fridge for 12 hours- I always have 2 jars going at once so I always have yoghurt

Super! We’re excited to get going on this, kids are anxious. I’m having to do split batches do to the fact that all the bottles we have are pint size. 🙂
That was how I started with 2 x 500ml ( Pint) jars and recently i bought a litre of coconut oil and now can make the double batch ( 2 cans)

You make it look so simple! I went out and bought the cans of coconut but couldn’t find the Keffir powder so I used my own probiotics. Is there anything else I need to add in place of the Keffir?

Yes it is simple- why i love it too. I see you are in Sydney- should be easy to find keffir at a health food shop? I found this for you- mix in two capsules full of your favorite probiotic powder with a clean spoon. I like Natren’s, Dr. Ohira, and Nature’s Way. If you are using a powder use about 1/4 teaspoon. This is a great way to test your probiotic powder, if it makes yogurt you know that the cultures are active.

I’ve never had coconut yogurt … but now you have peeked my interest! I’m thinking … even I could do that! Although … I think it wouldn’t ferment here in the winter …

Dear Ellie and Suzie and ALL, I only made the coconut keifer this morning. I’ve done lots of cultured veggies and cultured pickles, and so on, which are delicious. YUM!! But this is my first coconut kefir I’ve made, BUT….I have eaten it before and it is SO good over fresh fruit like pineapple chunks, blueberries or raspberries. Those are the fruits I’ve eaten it with so far.
I ALSO use it as a creamy salad dressing which I add herbs (dill and/or chives are especially good), fresh crushed garlic, Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt (and get the salts with color to them, either brownish, grayish or pinkish are best, that way you get the minerals too), and so on. Sometimes I add a touch of olive oil and lemon or lime juice to the coconut kefir salad dressing. Just play with it until you find a mix you like. SOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!! 🙂 Love to you all. Robin
It’s winter here and cool, so I set mine on the counter right next to the wall of my fridge, so when the fridge kick on the motor warms the whole fridge wall, just gently warm and it had always helped spark all my cultures. I’ll see how it goes. It’s interesting too, I MUCH I crave these healthy cultured foods. Goes to show that my body knows what it wants. 🙂

Dear Suzi, this is wonderful, especially for us vegans. I love coconuts and used to eat them fresh everyday when I lived in Australia. The trees grew along the roadside and on the beach and I used to just collect them fresh. Sure do miss that. I have a juicer that will make coconut milk from fresh coconuts, so I might try your recipe with raw coconut milk. If I mixed the coconut “water” (the clear liquid inside the nut) with the white milk from the meat, it might work. It’s so amazing that you just did this video because about a 4 weeks a ago I thought, I’ve got to start making coconut Kefir. Coconuts are SOOOO good for us, it’s a healthy fat, and it also revs up the metabolism if someone is trying to lose weight. But for me it’s good as it encourages my thyroid function better. Check out you tube there are loads of videos on making yoghurt with fresh coconuts- the water and the pulp. The amount that I eat and the coconuts I have been getting here are very young not much flesh- I might try it one day. So much more complicated- I am doing easy in 2013. I have recently bought freeze dried organic coconut powder for when i feel like a refreshing kift and the fresh one is not around.
I like the idea of the face mask i might just try it and make another video 🙂
