mum

Mother, Mum, Mom, Ma, Mama or Mamma some of the the names we call other mothers.

I always called my mother Mum  and on Mother’s Day yesterday my brother Roger and I reminisced and shared memories of our Mum. The good times and the what were probably some very trying times for her.

She was one very special person, although as rebellious teenager I didn’t always see those wonderful qualities that I know she had. That changed in later years and I had a very special bond with Mum. Recently I was reminded of her special qualities when I was asked for the eulogy I had written for Mum’s funeral back in January 2001. Looking through a box of photos and memories I  came across cuttings from the local newspaper the Canberra Times where my mother’s volunteer work was featured. I then found the eulogy and retyped it.

Gwladys Cheel

Gwladys May Cheel,  was a devoted wife, a loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, great aunt, a friend to so many, a tireless volunteer, a pioneer, a builder of this city and this community. She was very much a part of the history of Canberra and of this community of Ainslie where she lived for 50 years…….She is a shining example of someone who has left a legacy – a legacy of service and commitment – and who has touched so many lives. Thank you Mum – you made a real difference in this often very ordinary world and now you have the peace you richly earned.– These are some words from the eulogy I wrote back in 2000

Today I celebrate you mum, your love of life, of people and the legacy you left that I am so proud of. Your passion for people, conversation, your inquiring mind, your cooking, knitting and sewing. You taught me to love books, music theatre, craft, art and movies too. I still remember one of the last movies we went to see together was The Making of an American Quilt- a movie I still love to watch. We shared so many good times together, the time we went to The Edinburgh Festival and watched the Tattoo, when I wheeled you around the National Art Gallery in Melbourne and the little books of saying that you collected that I still read today. I have put a copy of the eulogy here for those who would like to read more.

Thank you Joy for birthing this post, for your words and the question in your beautiful post Mother’s Day is a Celebration of Birth.

We each have a mother.
You have an inner child whispering–sometimes screaming–for your attention, approval, appreciation.
How you treat this inner child in thought, word and action is a reflection of your mothering skills.
We are each a mother.
Can you feel the connection?  We are mothers.  Each one of us.

So when I drew this Angel Card this morning Listen  from The Daily Guidance cards and then read the message on the card and then the booklet said: You received this card because the angels are trying to get thought to you, they ask you to talk less and listen more and then as I was about to post this my site vanished.  I think I need to take more time to listen to my inner child 🙂

  1. Oh Suzie,
What a wonderful tribute to your mum.
And what a powerful message that’s coming through. You are channelling exactly what we are all needing to hear just now. I am hearing this from my clients, my friends and myself. Be still and listen is a true gift – thank you.
    Speak soon, much love

  2. This is a blessing in words Suzie. My mum passed away a few years ago and I still miss having her to chat with…even though we lived a world apart. We must have walked a similar path, I too was a bit of a rebel who grew up to truly appreciate and value the wisdom my mum had on offer. It took a while, but I got there. 🙂

    e-hugs

    1. Hi Kimba,
yes, my mother was a great story teller and a great listener and she used to get so frustrated when she felt we weren’t listening. Oh yes listen to our inner child is such wise advice

  5. I like the added bonus of the Daily Guidance Card. Nice. I was absolutely blessed with a very special mother. She makes me laugh and I love how we are so different, but we hold the highest respect and love for one another. Thank you for this memory.

    1. Hi Suzanne,
How wonderful to have a blessed relationship with your mother. Sometimes being different makes it easier than when there are more similarities. 🙂 Thanks for te comment about the card- I am getting back into my daily readings and find how spot on they are for what’s going on

  6. I have a Mum too and our relationship hasn’t always been easy but she’s a lovely well loved woman. We just don’t always fit together 😉 Lovely tribute to your Mum.

    1. Hi Louise,
I know that feeling, Mum was always proud of me and at the same time challenged by my individuality have raised me to be very independent! I know a Journey Intensive ( Brandon Bays) that i took released any hard feelings, etc i had and this was wonderful in the later years of her life 🙂

  7. Hi Suzie,

      1. Hi , Yes I did go back and read your Mum’s connection to All Saints Church . She must have loved the Church.

I am living in Chiwick in Sydney. Originally I was from Melbourne. I was born in Alexandra and my parents owned a Guest House In Buxton , then the Crossways in Maysville. My father re-joined the Airforce when I was 5 . We arrived in Canberra after a posting in Singapore ..

        1. yes that church was very dear to Mum.
Who know our paths may have crossed. In 1969 I was living in Ainslie and Teaching at a Preschool in Ainslie: Baker gardens.
I know Chiswick- lovely spot- I used to live in Lilyfield

    1. Thank you Lisa, delighted to meet you. Love that your daughter calls you Ma- find that very endearing. My heart sang when I read your comment as I nearly didn’t put this post out to the world after my blog did a vanishing trick on Monday. I am so happy I did. 🙂

  11. What a beautiful tribute to your Mum…and you carry on her legacy of service and commitment that touches the lives of everyone who knows you! I know your Mum would be very proud of who you are and who you are continuing to become!

Thank you for including a passage of my work in this very beautiful essay. I don’t know my mother, and I wasn’t raised with one, but I love the feel of Mothers Day and celebrating along with those who honor their moms in such a special was as you have!

    1. Hi Joy,
Well thanks for being the trigger that birthed the tribute. Thank you for you kind praise, you always make me stop and say who me:) Yes my mother was proud of me and was happy to tell others too.
Joy I was saddened to read that you didn’t know your mother, and now you are such a loving mother to Kevin and Kaityln. I loved your words they toughed my heart.

  12. Your mum was a special person…she left a legacy of service and commitment. Oh, that those words can be said about us someday. Thank you for sharing your mum with us.

    1. In the previous comment, I incorrectly listed my twitter name.
Again, thank you for this great post. It is special to me because
my mom turned 100 years old last November.

  13. What a beautiful woman your mum was and your relationship sounds so special. So much love in your words.

  14. What a gorgeous post and tribute to a wonderful lady , think we all go through that stage as a teen, I know my girl is beginning her rebel journey now 🙂

    1. Hi Mary,
Thank you Yes she was a special Mum. Remember the rebel journey is probably because you have brought her up to be independent 🙂 think that brings out the rebel within 🙂

  15. I am glad I am not the only rebel who grew up to really appreciate their mums. Your’s sounds wonderful. I still have mine and want to wrap her up in cotton wool and look after her.

Love the angel card – I will take it as a message to me as well. Jx

  16. This is so beautiful. I was a rebellious teenager too, but I’m so grateful to have the chance now to have a different relationship with my mom. Just like you, I can see her in a different light now. And thanks for the moving Mother’s Day Celebration quote.

    1. Hi Anne,

  17. Suzie,
What a wonderful woman your Mum sounds. We call our Mother Mum as well and she’s one of the most magnificent role models in our lives. I’m grateful for every second I have with her, knowing that time is moving on and at some stage we’ll have to say goodbye this time around. I hope I can give a eulogy half as fitting when that time comes.

My wish for you is that you can feel her love and energy around you always.
